WHY THE SEIRYUU SEISHI?

Ah...the Seiryuu side. The characters whom most Fushigi Yuugi fans love to hate. The ones reponsible for the suffering of most of the characters on the side of righteousness. With how the Seiryuu side has been portrayed, one might ask why this page is devoted to the servants of the blue dragon god.

Before that question is addressed, it is necessary to point out something rather important. It is made very clear in the series that the Suzaku seishi are the ones on the side of "good" and the Seiryuu seishi on the side of evil. The Seiryuu seishi are shown only when necessary to the plot, and are never portrayed as forming relationships like the Suzaku, Genbu, or Byakko seishi did. If one considers all four gods and then looks at the Seiryuu side, the shichi seishi of the blue dragon god seem a little...abnormal.

Now, there are many reasons why this could be. Seiryuu is the god of war, after all, and perhaps he didn't feel any need to pick his seishi and miko according to their abilities to work together and form friendships. Kutou's oppressive atmosphere is also far different from the relativly free countries of Hokkan, Konan, or Sairou. But it does seem a little odd how the Seiryuu seishi are so different from those of the other three gods. Was it indeed Seiryuu's plan? Was it their own mistakes in life? Or was it just that their god didn't care?

Seiryuu is never shown protecting his seishi or his miko. Miaka and her shichi seishi face multiple trials in which the healing power of Suzaku helps them through troubled times, such as their encounter with Hikitsu and Tomite in the cavern of Genbu. The Seiryuu shichi seishi, on the other hand, are entirely alone. They have no god to call upon to help them, no loving family or friends to run to. Miaka's shichi seishi stood behind her to the bitter end, championing their miko through all odds. Yui had no such support from her seishi. The seishi of the Seiryuu side are utterly alone.

In that kind of situation, it is easy to understand why the Seiryuu side is as introverted as they are. Compared to the other shichi seishi of the other gods, most of the Seiryuu seishi and even Seiryuu no Miko can be considered seriously delusional and/or mentally unstable. Many people brush off the Seiryuu seishi without even considering this. The seishi of the other three gods are (presumably) all human. The seishi of the other three gods formed strong bonds, as seen by the friendship of the whole Suzaku side, Hikitsu and Tomite, Tokaki, Subaru, Tatara and Suzuno. The Seiryuu side is distrusting, scheming, and, for the purpose of the TV series, almost all enemies towards each other. There is no "seishi bond" between the seven of them, except for maybe Soi and Nakago, and even that is doubtful. Nakago used Yui to his own ends. Tomo tortured Amiboshi. Suboshi killed Tomo.

The one person who keeps the Seiryuu seishi together is Nakago, and that is frightening. With the other three gods, there is no one "dominant" seishi. Rather, it seems to have been the miko who made choices for the group. With Seiryuu, Nakago is the ultimate authority and any mistake is met with severe punishment. Though Yui is addressed as "Yui-sama," she has no authority whatsoever. With the exception of the twins, all the Seiryuu seishi are loyal to Nakago alone.

There are many other facets of the Seiryuu shichi seishi that can be explored and discussed. But the fact remains that the Seiryuu seishi are one of the larger enigmas of Fushigi Yuugi.

It's not wrong to dislike a character. But in the case of Fushigi Yuugi, the viewer is not really given any choice to like or dislike the Seiryuu side. This page exists to introduce the misunderstood Seiryuu seishi in hopes that maybe Nakago, Soi, Amiboshi, Suboshi Tomo, Miboshi, Ashitare, and Yui will at least be understood a little more thoroughly.

Or, in any case, at least this page will be out there just because the Seiryuu seishi deserve so much more than they ever received.
